Description

Inspired by a couple games War Thunder and BFV this is a 100% custom build designed to look like a crashed section of a Spitfire wing.

My (Rod) Grandmother was also part of the Woman's Auxiliary Air Force (Later becoming the WRAF) and as a kid she told stories of Spitfires during WW2

When researching how to make a spitfire a computer a came across this black and white photo and it was the primary inspiration of the ripped open wing section. (The entire build is located in the wing)

While we done mods that use expensive hardware and crazy cool materials its always fun to build something cool and keep it on a very low budget. The whole case and base mod parts cost about 200.00 and can be purchased at any building supply store

These supplies include: 1/2 Plywood (for base) 3/4 MDF (for wing ribs) 1" ceder trim to create the terrain 3 cans of Loctite Titefoam 1 sheet of lath expanded metal 1 3/8" steel threaded rod to hold the wing 1 roll of 20" aluminum flashing 1 box of small brad nails (to create a riveted look on the metal)

Paint: 2 cans of self etching primer 2 cans of lime green (designed to give a zinc chromate primer look) 3 cans of camouflage primer 1 can of red 1 can of blue 3 cans of textured rock paint of different colors

I'll be uploading a video how I did it type worklog later to our youtube.com/c/bsmods channel later.

Added shot of the build before I put the skin on to show the hardware.

Its the CPU I had on hand and it required very little cooling. If I had an I7 I'd need to rip some more holes in the wing.

FYI, it's also a 1080, not a 2080

bsmods

lol maybe it grew up...I'll check...nope still a 1080

This is no doubt easily the best build I have ever seen on this site. Just incredible. Thank you for setting the bar high man! This is art!

  • 6 years 4 months ago

Gotta love the attention to detail and well placed holes. Beautiful piece of art right there. Is it easy to access the parts for future repairs, cleaning, or upgrades?

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Thanks

Not the easiest but by pulling the "rivets" you can peel back the skin and get to anything.

Holy **** dude this is real? I'll vote this in everyday if I have to just to get it featured. This build is so well put it's amazing! Congrats

When I first saw this, thumbnail, I got so curious to why someone would post a picture of a ripped off airplane's wing on Partpicker. Just now, I realized that there is an actual PC inside. Super creative and very cool looking.

bsmods

Better shot of the PC before the skin got put on the wing.

I got scared at first I thought this build was like a PC/RC plane gone wrong. Really nice work on the build with the small details. My grandpa was an airplane mechanic for the RAF in WW2, so this is pretty neat.

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

That is super cool its amazing that a few people have shared a connection with family that served in the RAF.

  • 6 years 4 months ago

For me to say impressive would be an under statement. This is such a unique and creative build as a computer. In addition, it has a backstory that gives it the character that other builds on this site generally don't have. Well done! Keep up the good work.

P.S. The bullet hole for the CPU cooler is super cool, It's exactly how I would imagine the inside of a spitfire wing might look!

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Thank you!

I designed the ribs from some blue prints and the green paint is a little bit brighter then the zinc chromate paint they used to prevent corrosion on the inside of aluminum aircraft.

If this isn't a feature I will delete my account.

How did you get EK for $300????

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

That might be a bit shy of what it cost but its a DDC block and 120mm slim very close to the kits you can buy for that price. I didn't want to price everything out. (CPU only on water cooling mostly for looks in this build that and the challenge of fitting cooling in a 7" wide 3" tall wing bay

Check out the EK HT Kit https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-kit-ht240

My grandfather was in the RAF during the war as well. I've got his flight wings about here somewhere too. Wish I could give you a couple more +1's where they count, but this'll have to do :)

Edit: The +1's for the excellent build, the backstory is an added bonus ;)

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Very cool what did he fly in?

Thanks for the +1 I'm love the feedback and opportunity to share!

poc88
  • 6 years 4 months ago

This is what I called custom! Nice, how do you open up and work on the component?

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

you have to pull the rivets and skin will peel back its not ideal but not to hard I might consider trying to using magnetic strips.

2ofthemgiven
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Cool idea i guess but where is the build? You show no ports or functionality. Basically just a prop, that's it.

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

If you look at the photos you can clearly see the ITX motherboard and looking close you can see the GTX 1080 in the leading edge of the wing. yes this is more of a prop type build and the ports are hidden on the side of the base.

2ofthemgiven
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Your either need more pictures or this just looks like someone put some green pipes in a fake wing. Show the innards, the complete system!

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

It wasn't designed to show the innards. I posted a pic of the system while I was building it before the skin was put on.

I saw this on the featured and I was like, "Why is there a broken toy plane wing on the featured? Is this a meme or something?" Then I looked through and there is a PC hiding in there!!! Incredible. Absolutely incredible man. Good for you.

for a sec I forgot what website I was on and saw the pics and im like wtf is that a graphics card in a airplain lol

Demonkiller6811
  • 6 years 4 months ago

so in other words looks pretty damn realistic

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Thanks I tried to get quite a bit of detail. The ribs that I made came from some blueprints from the RAF

Demonkiller6811
  • 6 years 4 months ago

damn, how long did it take you to build?

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

I built the wing frame in 2-3 weeks mostly on the weekends. and about 3 more weeks to build the base hardware and skin it.

AmateurPCGuy
  • 6 years 4 months ago

You could put this in a glass case or something and have a monitor connected up to it that runs a monitor with a unigine benchmark constantly going or something at 1440p or 4k.

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

I've debated building a hardwood base for it so instead of looking like a crashed wing piece on some rocks it would more look like a recovered and preserved artifact.

Big 'high five' and thumbs up for a job well done. I'm retired from the USAF and I have friends that restore old aircraft at the big museum here. Love what you did with this. Cheers!

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Thank you, High five right back out you Thanks for serving!!!!!! I love aircraft of all type and my grandfather on the other side of the family was a inspector for Boeing on the b-17 and b-29.

I'm always trying to go to the best air museums when I travel what museum are you referencing?

carssuckjeepsrule
  • 6 years 4 months ago

Warner Robins, Georgia. Very well done museum. https://www.museumofaviation.org/ From first hand experience, the armament museum at Eglin Florida, the Naval Aviation museum in Pensacola (Home of the Blue Angels), and the USMC museum (not specifically aviation obviously) in Quatico VA are very cool as well. There's plenty though! https://listosaur.com/history/10-great-aviation-museums-in-the-united-states/ Cheers and have fun!

bsmods
  • 6 years 4 months ago

I've been to Warner Robins what an amazing experience you get to be right next to so many aircraft I think my favorite part was the back grass area with the C-130 gunship a Connie and the Stratotanker.

I don't see how this would be a feature with the limited amount of photos.

Show us the build. Insides and all.

It's almost like you're teasing us with these pictures!

I can add some of the build process but as the build is designed you can't seen tons of the hardware.

I'm still trying to earn more skill points. Building things is so fantastic since you always have something new to build and lots of times can build it with a new medium
